July 20th 2024 – IT Outage

CrowdStrike

This is an email from Dale Durham, it points out how important it is for us to practice/train now, because there will be more of these “outages” in the future.  We have email available to us at this time.  But if in the future we have “software update issues” that cause email to be degraded, we will need to use winlink and/or voice on the radios.

Side note, if slack happens to have software issues at somepoint in the future, I would be monitoring all UHF/VHF repeaters within my radio reach.   I would also check in on 3.933 at 6:30 to hear any scuttlebutt from the Panhandle Area.  (Net officially begins at 7pm, but lots of guys are usually on there chatting by 6:30 for the “County Electric 2-Way” )

If phones/internet were not working, I would  go to 7.255, 7.290,  and listen.  I would be checking my winlink inbox regularly too.

Keep your skills sharp and your radios warm.

Hello Everyone,

With the ARRL’s bulk internet server still inoperative I am using our Zoom meeting roster to convey some important information to you and to share some thoughts regarding the current situation and the potential for more of the same.  I encourage you to share this email, or at least the link enclosed to others.

In the world we live in today, I believe that we will see these types of events continue and possibly increase in the future.  I certainly hope I’m wrong, but…

One of my increasing concerns is the attitude I’m seeing expressed by folks in EmComm, the media and the general public.  Many of these folks are passing this off as a “oh, well, it was a software update problem and it’s now fixed”.  Okay, that may be so, but what was the cost of the disruption?  Even in Midland, Texas one or maybe more of the banks were out of service for a while.  What about hospitals?  Let’s hope they have good backup systems…

We, as a society, have become way too complacent  and accepting of the cause and solution to many situations.  If it doesn’t affect us directly, it’s okay.

Enclosed is a link to a video prepared today by Jason Oldham, KM4ACK.  Jason does many preparedness videos and makes some very timely and important suggestions for us all to follow. Go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKRttZdR2rk
